Tourists have only recently begun to discover all the natural beauty that Croatia has to offer. This country is very bike-friendly, with thousands of kilometers of bike trails just waiting to be explored.
1. Mijet National Park: Covering the northwest corner of Mijet, Mijet national park has much to offer: The park encompasses two lakes: The Great Lake and the Small Lake. Singletrack lovers will be glad to hear that a nice, long, challenging single track awaits you by the shores of the Great Lake and also in a steep climb to the Montokuc sightseeing point (can be reached by hiking as well). Others will enjoy the views of St. Mary’s Isle and St. Mary’s Monastery, located in the middle of the Great Lake. Riding through the national park, you will ride through evergreen pine forests, which are among the best preserved in Europe.
2. Kninska Dinara: Situated between South Velebit and the Kninska Dinara mountains, the biking trail relies mostly on non-paved roads. Experience the Zrmanja river and climb up to the valley overlooking it. Cross major Croatian railways on your way to the picturesque Postak mountain. Part of the trail should be done by foot (it is very steep). A challenging singletrack down the mountain to an ole WWII monument awaits you as you make your way to Zrmanja Vrilo village and the Zrmanja river springs which are about 3 km away.
3. Plitvice National Park: The national park of Plitvice is a paradise of waterfalls, streams, and of course, the sixteen lakes the park consists of. Over 60 kms of cycling trails await us in Croatia’s top tourist attraction. Cycle the parks and witness the wonders of nature at their best. Additional recreational sports such as kayaking and hiking are also available for your enjoyment.
4. Island Krk – Many technical challenges await us on the island of Krk. The rocky landscape provides many opportunities for singletracks. Reach Obzovo Point, the highest peak in Krk, before riding downhill (in a VERY challenging singletrack) to the small port town of Punat.
5. Cape Ostro: The southernmost tip of Croatia is a place not frequented by tourists. The unpaved road provides a great excuse for cycling only, and flowering meadows and fields provide a great backdrop for a beautiful countryside ride. Visit Prevlaka Fortress, a 19th century military masterpiece which was badly damaged during WWII, and have a look at the fortress on nearby Mamula Island and of course pick up some authentic Prevlaka asparagus from the sides of the road.
6. River Mrežnica – Located in the heart of Croatia, a ride along this river is recommended for all water lovers. Pass through Mreznica and Svojic villages and stop there to take a look around and refresh yourselves before continuing to ride along the river banks and across old and picturesque villages.
7. Brac Island: Brac is a mountain biking paradise: Its dry, hilly landscape provides many beautiful mountain biking routes. Visit Vidova Gora, the highest point in Brac, where you will be awarded a breath-taking view of the Adriatic Islands in all their glory. Visit the ruins of Sveti Vid chapel and Afterwards you can enjoy downhill singletrack back to Bol City, or an easy glide to the town of Milna.
8. North Velebit National Park: This relatively new national park is full of mountaineering trails and unexplored singletracks. Hop off your bike to explore Luka’s cave, and bike to the various peaks to view the Adriatic Islands in all their glory. Watch out for bears as you cycle through the oak, ash, maple and fir forests that this wild nature reserve has to offer.
