Tips for Safe Mountain-Biking

Mountain-biking is a great sport: Enjoying beautiful rides and great climbs and downhill singles – what’s not to love?!
Nevertheless, like all sports – Mountain-biking is best done safely. Following are BlueBird Riders’ top tips for safe mountain-biking:

  1. The helmet is your best friend:  It might be hot and sweaty when mountain biking in Turkey and Croatia, but that helmet is the second most important thing to protect you while you're riding your bike. Funnily enough, its job is to protect the single most important thing whilst out on the biking trail - your brain.
  2. Protective Gear: Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced rider, protective gear such as gloves, padded pants and proper riding shoes (with the laces tucked in of course!) are imperative for any mountain biker.  Bring along a first-aid kit for any small bruises and scrapes that you may acquire along the way.
  3. .Hydrate! Drinking water is important no matter what you do, but it becomes even more important aboard our bike and sea vacations. With the warm Croatian sun bearing down on our backs while climbing up Hum mountain (on Korcula Island), it is important that we maintain a steady supply of H2O and not get dehydrated (so we can hop off the boat and see some more of the Croatian islands the next day!).
  4. Know your body – Many sports require from us to push ourselves, but we have to be careful. Acknowledge your body’s advantages and limitations . This is especially important when going on a mountain-biking vacation: If you ride too hard and then cannot ride for three days, you’ve basically thrown your mountain bike vacation away (on BlueBird Riders bike and sea vacations this would not be so big of a problem, you can always enjoy the leisure program along with the rest of the non-riders).
  5. Speed: Ride at a speed that allows you to adjust to any unforeseen changes and obstacles.
  6. Know the trail: A crucial part of a well-managed biking trip should be the guide. A good guide is one who is already acquainted with the area and the trails and who can adjust the trip in accordance with the terrain and weather conditions as well as the group’s level.
  7. Make sure your bike is in good condition: Getting geared up? Don’t forget to check out your bike as well: Air in those tires, functioning brakes, and of course a well-oiled chain can make a huge difference in your mountain biking experience!
  8. Remember to have fun: Mountain biking is an amazing sport, especially when combined with stunning views and a few friends, just be safe!
